Eid-el-Fitr: El-rufai Commends Kaduna Muslims For Obeying COVID-19 Orders

Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i on Sunday commended the patience and understanding displayed by the Muslim faithful in observing the Ramadan fasting under conditions of quarantine this year.

El-Rufa’i made this commendation in an Eid-el-Fitr message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, and made available to newsmen in Kaduna.

The governor prayed that Almighty Allah would amply reward and bless these efforts.

He also praised the spirit of sacrifice and resilience displayed by the community during the fasting period and called for continued adherence to public health guidelines to protect citizens from COVID-19.

Mr El-Rufa’i said that the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic had created limited the traditions associated with fasting and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr this year.

”I thanked the Muslim community for abiding with the public health guidelines and avoiding congregational worship and communal gatherings to break the fast.

”I acknowledged that these public health guidelines also make it impossible to permit the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr with congregational prayers, and l thanked the Muslim community for understanding this.

”l commend the Imams especially and welcome this as another example of the spirit of sacrifice and discipline required to protect the community during dangerous periods.

”I appeal to the Muslim community to keep hope alive, to continue to practice compliance with health guidelines and not to relent in prayers for an end to the disruptions caused by COVID-19,” he said.

Eid-el-Fitr: Emir Of llorin Cancels Sallah Homage To Gov. AbdulRazaq

The Emir of llorin, Alhaji lbrahim Sulu-Gambari, on Sunday, canceled the annual Sallah homage to the Kwara Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

This is in a bid to discourage further spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The monarch, who is also the permanent Chairman of the State Council of Chiefs, ordered the cancellation of the 2020 Eid-el-Fitr Sallah homage in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Malam AbdulAzeez Arowona.

The royal father, who was expected to lead other traditional rulers in the Ilorin Emirate to pay Eid-el-Fitr visit to the Government House on Monday, said he would no longer embark on the traditional homage.

“This is in line with strict adherence to the lockdown and movement restriction order imposed in the state and aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19,” the Emir said.

He urged residents of Ilorin Emirate to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr with decorum and extend charity to the less privilege to further promote unity and prosperity.

Sulu-Gambari charged community heads, district heads, ward heads, groups and associations to be vigilant and ensure social distancing during and after Sallah celebration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that all Eid praying grounds in the emirate were empty on Sunday as worshippers stayed away in compliance with government directive.

The Muslims performed the two Eid-el-Fitr raka’ats supererogatory prayers in their homes without sermons or use of public address system as directed by the Emir of llorin.

Man Arrested For Defiling Rivers 10-year-old Girl

A middle-aged man identified simply as Nanso has been arrested by the police in Rivers State for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.

The incident happened on Ekwulobia Street, Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, but the suspect was handed over to the police on Friday.

A resident of the area identified only as Ben said but for the intervention of a landlord in the compound who called the police, an angry mob would have lynched the suspect.

According to Ben, the suspect was caught by a neighbour while having carnal knowledge of the girl.

Ben said:

“The suspect claimed it was not done by force and that the girl consented to it. He also claimed he only robbed ‘it’ (his manhood) on the surface of the girl’s private parts and did not penetrate. He claimed he asked the girl to close her laps.’’

It was learnt that the incident was revealed on Friday when the girl’s mother identified only as Christiana discovered bloodstain on her daughter’s underwear and enquired what happened to her.

Christiana reportedly said her daughter disclosed to her that a family friend, who regularly visited their house, attacked her and raped her when there no one was around, adding that he also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what happened.

Sunday PUNCH learnt that after learning about what transpired, Christiana alerted the youth of the community after which they apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, advising parents and guardians to always watch over their children, especially at a period when sexual harassment was on the increase.

Omoni said, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested and taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department and is being investigated.

“Parents should be able to monitor the movements of their children, especially the vulnerable ones so that they don’t run into the hands of those who might want to take advantage of them and have carnal knowledge of them.”

The state PPRO added that the command had recorded a sharp increase in reports of domestic violence as well as sexual harassment and was tackling them accordingly to ensure a safe environment for residents.

He said, “These are strange times, such that everybody has to be cautious. In a situation where residents are locked indoors, the tendency for social problems to arise is there. Within this period, we have recorded a rise in matrimonial and domestic crises; wives quarrelling and fighting their husbands, husbands beating their wives because when they are asked to stay together indoors. Temptations will come and some may not resist them.

We also recorded a case of homosexuality at Oroworokwo where a man had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old boy. The man has been arrested and is being investigated at the state CID.’’

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers assisted a pregnant woman driving herself to the hospital amid labour pains on Saturday.

This was disclosed by Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC public education officer, in a statement on Sunday, saying the incident occurred in Lagos.

NAN reports that a patrol team belonging to the airport unit command of the FRSC was said to have sighted the pregnant woman as she was driving herself to the hospital.

The pregnant woman was struggling to drive amidst painful labour and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Ajao Estate, where she was delivered of a baby girl barely three hours later, Kazzem said.

He noted that the FRSC patrol team simply carried out its duty in line with the corps statutory responsibility of saving lives through prompt rescue services on the roads.

He also said Boboye Oyeyemi, the FRSC corps marshal, has expressed appreciation to the patrol team for the prompt intervention and rescue services.

3 Persons Arrested For Insulting President Buhari, Others On Social Media

Police have arrested Lawal Abdullahi Izala, ‘m’, aged 70yrs, Bahajaje Abu, ‘m’, aged 30yrs and Hamza Abubakar, ‘m’, aged 27yrs all of Gafai Quarters, Katsina, Katsina state for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and the executive governor of Katsina state, Aminu Bello Masari, CFR.”
The trio were said to have insulted Buhari in a viral video on the social media.

Disclosing this in a statement, Gambo Isah, spokesman of the Katsina police command said:

“The attention of the Katsina state police command has been drawn to a viral video on social media showing one Lawal Abdullahi, alias “IZALA”, ‘m’, aged 70yrs of Gafai quarters, Katsina, Katsina state, who was contemptuously insulting the President and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, federal republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and his excellency, the executive governor of Katsina state, Aminu Bello Masari, CFR.
“Consequently, the commissioner of police, Katsina state command, CP Sanusi Buba, ordered for investigation, which led to the arrest of the trio of Lawal Abdullahi Izala, ‘m’, aged 70yrs, Bahajaje Abu, ‘m’, aged 30yrs and Hamza Abubakar, ‘m’, aged 27yrs all of Gafai Quarters, Katsina, Katsina state.
“In the course of investigation suspects confessed to the committing the offences. “To this end, the command wishes to warn members of the general public that the police will not fold its arms and watch while disgruntled elements violate the sacred laws of the land,” Isah added.
“Any person found taking undue advantage of the social media to insult others, contrary to the provisions of the Cyber Crime Act, will face the wrath of the law.”

However, this is not the first time security agents have arrested people for insulting President Buhari. Omoyele Sowore was arrested for organizing #RevolutionNow protest and for insulting Buhari.

Three More Bodies Have Been Recovered From Imo Building Collapse - Photos

Three more bodies have been recovered from the 8-storey building under construction that collapsed in Owerri, the Imo state capital on Thursday April 30. The building collapsed at about 4pm when artisans were still working.

One body was recovered shortly after the incident. Three more bodies have now been recovered from the site by the rescue workers, bringing the death toll to 4.

A woman who is said to be selling consumables to the workers on the site is said to be trapped under the rubble alongside her two children.

Police Intercept Corpse Of Suspected COVID-19 Patient In Osun

The Police in Osun State intercepted a car carrying the corpse of suspected COVID-19 patient into the State from Ibadan, Oyo state.

The car was intercepted around 6:30 PM on Sunday at the Odo Oba border along Ibadan/Iwo road by operatives enforcing lockdown order in Osun.

According to a source, the medical team at the border suspected the corpse to have died of COVID-19 in Oyo State.

It was gathered by our Correspondent that a Mazda 323 car, ash colour with registration number KFS 409 EH which was used to convey the corpse was driven by one Ismaila Ademola.

It was also learnt that the corpse was identified as Yusuf Ishola and the car used in conveying the corpse belongs to one Mrs. Texaco.

A source also disclosed that security operatives and some government officials escorted the vehicle back to Divisional Police Officer, Adebayo Micheal, at Iyana Offa in Oyo State to hand over the car with the corpse.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident and said that the commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo has directed closer monitoring of border towns.

Their wing is growing. Or how else can we explain the actions of these hoodlums snatching an army van?

The consequence obviously will be brutal.

According to the video posted on claimed to be shared by a surulere resident.

He reportedly shared the video with a caption that states:

“If you’re in Surulere Lagos and wondering why You Saw A Military Chopper Moving Sround This Evening?
Well this is the reason, imagine these boys collected Soldier’s Van.”

The residents of surulere community in Lagos were left to look in amazement at the action of the hoodlums, who in their hundreds appear very remorseful and deadly.

Chanting and jumping in excitement for the great feat achieved, snatching an army van! Really it is indeed a great feat, but it could also be their death sentence.

Because the Nigerian army will ensure that the hoodlums are tracked and apprehended.

So if they don’t end up losing their lives, they will definitely wish they had died when they get tortured.

They definitely have bitten more than they can chew by attacking the army, their end is at sight.

Still, the federal government should stop this audio promises and give the people palliative to ease the living condition of Nigerian Citizens during this lockdown.

Shehu Sani Condemns Ganduje’s Move To Deport Almajiris From Kano

Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker Kaduna Central Senator, has criticized Governor of Kano State, Umar Ganduje for approving the deportation of almajiris in the State.

We had reported that Ganduje said the deportation was taken to reduce the risk of exposing almajiris to the deadly coronavirus.

He was quoted as saying, “This is to reduce the risk of exposing them to Coronavirus and related hardship from the lockdown that will further affect them.”

But reacting Shehu Sani said

“To embrace and accommodate the Almajiri for Elections and Census and reject and ‘deport’ them for #COVIDー19 Is Unconscionable.”

The Governor had earlier banned street begging by Almajiri children in the state.

Ganduje had said the decision was made to fully consolidate the free and compulsory primary and secondary schools education in Kano State.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says the salaries of health workers in the state would be increased.

He said this during a televised media briefing on COVID-19 updates in Lagos monitored by our correspondent on Monday.

He also commended the health workers for their sacrifices and professionalism in fighting coronavirus in the state.

“We are increasing the salaries of all health workers in Lagos,” he said.

The governor also warned against panic, noting that “isolation centres are not death centres. It is important for us not to panic but to obey the regulations that have been put in place.”

He also urged Muslim faithful in the state to obey social distancing during their month of fasting, Ramadan.

“As we prepare to observe Ramadan, let us continue to obey the laws of the land. Any gathering of people numbering above 25 is not acceptable,” he added.

Lifting The Lockdown In Ghana Is Big Mistake – John Mahama

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has just suggested via a tweet that the president’s directive to lift the partial lockdown in the West African country is a big mistake from the authorities.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer took to social media to register his disapproval of the President’s move.

According to the former head of state, many health experts are advocating for an extension of the partial lockdown. Others are even calling for a total lockdown of the whole country to salvage the Coronavirus pandemic and corresponding issues.

He tweeted:

“Recent developments have made it clear, the extent of the spread of the virus. The last report put the number of confirmed cases at 834. Many health experts continue to suggest the necessity and appropriateness of an extension of the restrictions on movement.”

President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo Addo in his 7th address of the Nation on coronavirus, he lifted the partial lockdown imposed in some parts of the country despite the advice of John Mahama.

He, however, stated that the ban on all social gatherings and the closure of all schools is still working.

Oil Price Goes Below $5 As Coronavirus Hits Global Economy

Oil prices have plunged further below $5 a barrel with the threat to erase a decade of demand growth with thousands of jobs under threat as coronavirus continues to spread further.

A Bloomberg report revealed that industrial and economic activity is grinding to a halt as governments around the globe extend shutdowns due to the swift spread of the coronavirus.

Oil has faced its own knock-on effects with a market massively oversupplied and nowhere to put physical barrels of crude.

An unprecedented output deal by OPEC and allied members a week ago to curb supply is proving too little too late in the face a one-third collapse in global demand.

On Monday, a technical oddity exacerbated the price plunge as traders fled the May futures contract ahead of its expiration tomorrow, driving it down as much as 78 percent to the lowest level since futures began trading in New York in 1983.

The following month’s contract fell 11 percent to $22.22 a barrel. CME Group said it’s possible that the May WTI contract could trade negative.

“There is little to prevent the physical market from the further acute downside path over the near term,” said Michael Tran, managing director of global energy strategy at RBC Capital Markets.
“Refiners are rejecting barrels at a historic pace and with U.S. storage levels sprinting to the brim, market forces will inflict further pain until either we hit rock bottom, or COVID clears, whichever comes first, but it looks like the former.”

JAMB Releases 2019 Provisional Admission List

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, has published the 2019 provisional matriculation list of admitted candidates on the official website of the board.

The board disclosed this in its weekly bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.

The board also advised candidates who were yet to accept their offers of admission on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to do so or risk forfeiting the admission.

According to the board, the list of fully-admitted candidates in all the tertiary institutions in the country is hereby published on the JAMB Website.

“For ease of checking, candidates can visit: www.jamb.org.gov., proceed to menu titled ‘STUDENTS+’, select the submenu ‘CHECK MATRICULATION LIST 2019’ option and search for their names by entering their 10-digit JAMB Registration Number.
“There is a large number of candidates who have been offered Provisional Admission but are yet to accept the admission.
“A list containing their names is also on display on the board’s website and such candidates are to immediately accept such offers by using the CAPS Mobile App downloaded from the Google Play Store.

“With the App successfully installed and accessed on their devices, candidates do not need to visit any CBT centre or cybercafe as doing so would be a violation of the work-from-home/stay-at home order in place in most parts of the country.”

JAMB, however, said that candidates should note that failure to accept such offers of admission on the CAPS platform would result in the forfeiture of such admissions.

“Candidates are also to note that acceptance of admission on any website other than CAPS is not a valid acceptance as any admission not processed and accepted through CAPS is not known to JAMB.
“Alternatively, affected candidates who are not sure of their 2019 admission status can check for such from their phones by sending “STATUS 2019” to 55019.
“However, in the event of any challenges, candidates are to lodge their complaints immediately by using the online ticketing platform at support.jamb.gov.ng under 2019 Admission List Issue.
“Candidates are to note that only those who had accepted their offers of admissions on CAPS and whose names appear on the Provisional Matriculation List are recognised as bonafide students of the various institutions.
“By implication, if a candidate’s name is not on this published list which will be sent to all tertiary institutions, NYSC and other stakeholders, his/her application for mobilisation in the NYSC scheme, employment, among others, would be declined,” the board said.

Intensify Onslaught Against Boko Haram – Arewa Youths Tell Nigerian Army

The Arewa Action for Change and Peace (AACP) has urged the Nigerian Army to sustain its momentum against Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

The group’s call followed a recent attack against insurgents by troops of the Nigerian Army in Buni Gari.

The attack which led to the killing of 105 members of the terrorist group in Buni Gari.

A statement signed by the Arewa youths president, Haske Abdulmuminu, on Monday, April 20, said Nigerian Army’s mission to eliminate the terrorists is closer than envisaged, especially with the charismatic, dogged and resilient of the chief of army staff.

Abdulmuminu urged Nigerians to rally behind the troops while e assuring troops of ACP’s unflinching support, especially in dampening the work of Boko Haram sympathizers.

He appealed to the troops to intensify efforts to flush out the remnants of insurgents and also be mindful of the dynamics of how COVID-19 interplays with the military operations.

He said the group will love to see more unrepentant Boko Haram fighters bite the dust especially with the ideology that drives them.

The group’s call followed a recent attack against insurgents by troops of the Nigerian Army in Buni Gari.

“Now that the terrorists are no longer free to escape across the border, beyond Nigeria’s jurisdiction, we can see that troops led by Lt. General Buratai, who relocated to the theatre of operations, have made enormous gains beyond the expectations of Nigerians,” Abdulmuminu said.

He said the Arewa youths believe the troops could do more with acknowledgement and the right motivation from citizens and stakeholders alike.

He said:-

“It is also important that troops approach the remaining operations without the intention of taking captives in order to avoid the kind of mess in which the Chadian authorities have now found themselves after 44 of 58 Boko Haram terrorists they captured during battle committed mass bombing while in custody.”
