Man Arrested For Defiling Rivers 10-year-old Girl

A middle-aged man identified simply as Nanso has been arrested by the police in Rivers State for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.

The incident happened on Ekwulobia Street, Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, but the suspect was handed over to the police on Friday.

A resident of the area identified only as Ben said but for the intervention of a landlord in the compound who called the police, an angry mob would have lynched the suspect.

According to Ben, the suspect was caught by a neighbour while having carnal knowledge of the girl.

Ben said:

“The suspect claimed it was not done by force and that the girl consented to it. He also claimed he only robbed ‘it’ (his manhood) on the surface of the girl’s private parts and did not penetrate. He claimed he asked the girl to close her laps.’’

It was learnt that the incident was revealed on Friday when the girl’s mother identified only as Christiana discovered bloodstain on her daughter’s underwear and enquired what happened to her.

Christiana reportedly said her daughter disclosed to her that a family friend, who regularly visited their house, attacked her and raped her when there no one was around, adding that he also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what happened.

Sunday PUNCH learnt that after learning about what transpired, Christiana alerted the youth of the community after which they apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, advising parents and guardians to always watch over their children, especially at a period when sexual harassment was on the increase.

Omoni said, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested and taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department and is being investigated.

“Parents should be able to monitor the movements of their children, especially the vulnerable ones so that they don’t run into the hands of those who might want to take advantage of them and have carnal knowledge of them.”

The state PPRO added that the command had recorded a sharp increase in reports of domestic violence as well as sexual harassment and was tackling them accordingly to ensure a safe environment for residents.

He said, “These are strange times, such that everybody has to be cautious. In a situation where residents are locked indoors, the tendency for social problems to arise is there. Within this period, we have recorded a rise in matrimonial and domestic crises; wives quarrelling and fighting their husbands, husbands beating their wives because when they are asked to stay together indoors. Temptations will come and some may not resist them.

We also recorded a case of homosexuality at Oroworokwo where a man had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old boy. The man has been arrested and is being investigated at the state CID.’’

Policeman Attacked With Acid In Nkpor, Anambra By Angry Youths

Some policemen were left running for their lives after being attacked by angry youths in Nkpor, over the killing of a young man in an unprovoked encounter earlier today.

Videos shared online earlier, showed youths marching down to a police station before an attack was launched on some police officers.

Anambra Police Command spokesperson, Mr Haruna Mohamed confirmed that some members of a police patrol team were attacked by the youths. He said an unprovoked attack was launched against a Police patrol team, with a substance suspected to be acid.

Haruna further told newsmen that “efforts are ongoing to restore sanity in the area”.

Lockdown: Woman gets Shot by Police During Hunger Protest in Delta

A policeman in Delta State on Wednesday, allegedly shot a protesting woman, left his rifle behind and ran to an unknown location.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, told reporters that “the police are on the trail of the suspect in order to intensify investigations into the matter.”

The protest of which a large number of women participated in Sapele area of the state was as a result of the extension of the coronavirus lockdown announced by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, on Tuesday evening.

DAILY POST reported earlier that women and youths took the streets in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of the state to protest the extension of lockdown by the government and lack of palliative care.

The protest recorded its first casualty as the protester was shot by a policeman as the women protested over hunger.

The woman is now lying in a critical condition in the hospital after the officer shot her two legs.

The victim was reportedly shot at a close range in both legs by the trigger-happy policeman despatched to restore normalcy in the area.

The policeman was said to have immediately ran away leaving his service rifle behind in a desperate move to avoid mob attack.

18 Killed During Lockdown by Security Agencies

The National Human Rights Commission has reported that law enforcement agents killed 18 persons while enforcing the lockdown ordered by the Federal Government to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

The NHRC disclosed this in a report on the first phase of the lockdown, from March 30 to April 13.

The commission said a total of 105 complaints bordering on rights violations were received from 24 states during the first phase of the lockdown.

The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, said the complaints came from the Federal Capital Territory, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross Rivers and Ebonyi states.

Complaints were also received from Edo, Enugu, Ekiti, Delta Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Plateau and Rivers states.

The complaints received and documented by the NHRC within the period include cases of extrajudicial killings, violation of right to freedom of movement, unlawful arrest and detention, and seizure/confiscation of properties.
There were also cases of sexual and gender based violence, discrimination, torture, inhumane and degrading treatment and extortion.

“Whereas COVID-19 has led to the death of about 11 patients to date (Wednesday), law enforcement agents have extrajudicially executed 18 persons to enforce the regulations.

“This speaks volumes of the protocols and rules of engagement for our law enforcement as well the efficiency level and capacity of law enforcement agents to deal with civil population,” Ojukwu added.

Civil Defence Officer Kills A Driver In Abia During Lockdown

Hundreds of road users were on Wednesday held to a standstill at the Umuikaa, Isiala Ngwa South LGA Abia state axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway as youths took to the street in protest over the killing of a commercial driver by an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Isiala Ngwa Division whose identity could not be ascertained at the moment of filing this report.

Our correspondent gathered that the commercial driver carrying perishable and non-perishable food items reportedly had an argument with the NSCDC personnel over issues said to border on money.

An eyewitness said while the argument was still on, the driver attempted to drive off, a situation that triggered the anger of the NSCDC officer, leading him to shoot the driver.

The situation however did not go down well with the youths of the area who attempted lynching the NSCDC official.

The suspect, who narrowly escaped death, ran into a police station in the area for safety.

According to an eyewitness: “The driver carrying tomatoes among other food items approached the Civil Defence checkpoint where they (NSCDC) were enforcing the order of the governor (Ikpeazu) on COVID-19 after they flagged him down.

“We didn’t know what they were discussing initially, but when temper started flaring, the driver was accusing him (NSCDC) personnel of extortion.

“The driver said that he can’t give him more than what he has given (bribe) to him (the NSCDC official), insisting that the restriction order doesn’t affect drivers carrying food items.

“When the temper was high, we left and were watching the drama from afar.

“The driver tried driving off and the next thing we heard was a gunshot. We all ran away and by the time we came back, we saw the driver in the pool of his blood.

“The gunshot attracted people in the area and seeing what happened, the youths and others blocked the express in protest.”

The Public Relations Officer of NSCDC Abia State Command, Ndukwe Aguiyi could not be reached for comments.

But a source in the command, who craved anonymity, said they had already contacted the Isiala Ngwa Division under whose jurisdiction the incident happened to furnish the Headquarter with information over the incident.

The source stated that the command had already set up an investigative committee on the matter, adding that the command doesn’t condone any act of indiscipline and unprofessional behavior among its personnel.

INTERPOL Uncovers COVID-19 Face Masks FRAUD Destined For Nigerian Account

The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has announced it uncovered a sophisticated COVID-19 face masks fraud scheme with the proceed destined for a Nigerian account. INTERPOL in a press statement on Tuesday elucidating the scheme said in mid-March, German health authorities contracted two sales companies in Zurich and Hamburg to procure EUR 15 million (about N6.3billion) worth of face masks.

This was part of Germany’s effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The nation, as of April 15th, 2020 recorded 132,210 confirmed cases of the virus with 3,495 deaths. The whole scheme started with an email address and website linked to a legitimate company in Spain selling face masks, according to the INTERPOL narration.

“Through email correspondence, the company initially claimed to have 10 million masks, only for the delivery to fall through. As consolation, they then referred the buyers to a ‘trusted’ dealer in Ireland. The Irish middleman promised to put them in touch with a different supplier, this time in the Netherlands.”

The new supplier in Netherland according to the scammer was capable of supplying the needed 10 million face masks but will need an upfront payment of EUR 1.5 million (about N631,210,863) for an initial delivery of 1.5 million.

“The buyers initiated a bank transfer to Ireland and prepared for delivery, which involved 52 lorries and a police escort to transport the masks from a warehouse in the Netherlands to the final destination in Germany. “Just before the delivery date, the buyers were informed that the funds had not been received and that an emergency transfer of EUR 880,000 [about N370.4 million] straight to the Dutch supplier was required to secure the merchandise,” INTERPOL recalled.

Sensing something fishy, the buyers immediately contacted their bank in Germany which relayed the development to the INTERPOL’s Financial Crimes Unit. INTERPOL in the chase for the money engaged “banks, financial intelligence units, and judicial authorities, as well as partner organizations Europol and EUROJUST”. “INTERPOL contacted its National Central Bureau in Dublin as well as the Irish bank. Prompt intervention by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau allowed them to freeze the 1.5 million in the account and identify the Irish company involved.”

The Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service tracked down the EUR 880,000 transferred from the German company. Of the total sum, nearly EUR 500,000 of those funds had already been sent to the United Kingdom (UK) and destined to be credited to an account in Nigeria.

“They adapted their sales pitches to take advantage of strained supply chains and generate huge profits. I can only salute the quick work of both the private and public authorities involved. INTERPOL will continue its work on the case – and the many others like it – in close cooperation with all of our partners,” INTERPOL Chief stated. AN undergraduate, Femi Adejuwon has blamed the devil for raping a 16-year-old secondary school leaver in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

He pleaded for mercy, regretting his crime and promised to turn over a new leaf.

The suspect is an undergraduate of Accountancy Department, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti.

In an interview, the suspect said this when he was paraded in Akure by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

He said that he was pushed to commit the crime by the devil and had regretted his action.

Meanwhile, the state commandant of the corps, Philip Ayuba in a statement said that, “Information reaching us from concerned citizens in Ijoka Area, Akure, on Sunday, April 12, 2020, says that a 16-year-old student, who is currently awaiting admission, was allegedly raped by one Femi Adejuwon, an undergraduate of Accountancy Department, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti.

“Based on investigation, the victim narrated her terrible ordeal after being discharged from the Police Clinic, Akure.

"She said that the suspect called her on phone to meet him in his friend’s place. On getting there, Femi Adejuwon took her in, shut the door and forcefully violated her.

“She was later rescued in a pool of her blood,” he said.

The commandant said that the suspect had confessed to the crime after interrogation.

Ayuba, however, added that investigation was still ongoing on the matter and the suspect would be charged to court for justice to take its course.

He advised parents and guardians to watch over their children or wards, especially during this COVID-19 lockdown.

Ayuba admonished youths to shun all social vices such as rape, theft, cultism, vandalism and riot among others.

18 Nigerians killed By Security Agencies During Lockdown, More than COVID - 19

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says Nigeria’s security agencies have killed 18 citizens since the lockdown regulations on the COVID-19 pandemic were enforced — more than the disease itself.

Tony Ojukwu, NHRC executive secretary, said majority of the victims were killed during attempts to enforce the coronavirus lockdown and similar regulations.

The federal and state governments had locked down various parts of the country to curb the spread of COVID-19 which has so far killed 11 persons in Nigeria.

But the lockdown has come with various human rights abuses mostly by policemen, the NHRC said in its report shared with TheCable on Wednesday.

The commission said in addition to the reported extrajudicial killings, the security agencies have allegedly carried out 33 incidents of torture, 27 incidents of violation of right to freedom of movement, and unlawful arrests, 19 incidents of seizure of properties and 13 incidents of extortion.

“There were 8 documented incidents of extra-judicial killing leading to 18 deaths,” the report read.

“Out of this number, 12 deaths were recorded in Kaduna State. Abia State also recorded 2 deaths arising from 2 incidents; while Delta, Niger, Ebonyi and Katsina States recorded 1 death each.

“The report further shows that out of the 18 deaths, the Nigeria Correctional Service was responsible for 8 deaths while the Nigeria Police Force was responsible for 7 deaths.

“The Nigeria Army on the other hand was responsible for 2 deaths while the Ebonyi State Task Force on Covid-19, Afikpo South LGA was responsible for 1 death.”

Ojukwu said the fatalities speak volumes of the protocol and rules of engagement for Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies and their efficiency level to deal with citizens.

“It’s a sheer display of impunity and reckless disregard for human life in law enforcement by security personnel,” he added.

He also said while the NHRC will ensure justice for victims of human rights abuse, it has developed a mobile application to monitor and document such violations.

Nigerian Student Arrested after Raping A Hungarian Prostitute

A 22-year-old Nigerian man, suspected of choking and raping a woman in Budapest’s 7th district, originally came to Hungary to study.

A 22-year-old university student is being prosecuted for sexual violence after the Activity Control Center of the Budapest Police Headquarters received a report from a woman that she had been raped in her home, according to police.hu.

The woman told the detectives that she had met the man on a website which advertises sexual services. In the afternoon, at around 3 PM of April 11, the man went to her house, she asked for the money in advance, but after he refused to pay, she told him to go. The man did not leave the woman’s home; instead he started choking her, raped her, then fled the scene.

The police officers of the 7th district of Budapest started looking for the perpetrator immediately. They checked out the information the woman could provide about the man as well as footages from nearby security cameras.

This led them to identify the 22-year-old E. I. Joseph as the culprit. They arrested him in the 6th district the same day, at 6:40 PM. The police questioned the Nigerian student, who has a valid visa, with the well-founded suspicion of sexual violence. He denies committing the crime. He is now being held in custody.

Ikotun, Lagos Robbers Caught And Tortured

A group of suspected teenage robbers cried for mercy as they were tortured after they were allegedly caught robbing in Ikotun, Lagos.

Residents of Igando and Ikotun in Lagos State fearfully kept vigil on Monday night, April 13, as robbers reportedly went from house to house.

This comes one day after Iyana-Ipaja residents in Lagos experienced the same thing and took to Twitter to raise awareness about it with the hashtag #Lagosunrest.

Ikotun residents decided to take laws into their hands and they captured some teenagers, then tortured them.

A video from the scene shows the teenagers crying and pleading for mercy as they were flogged and tortured with a hot rod.

Someone is heard in the video claiming that one of the suspects is 14 years old.

A Man in Imo Who Invited Friends To Have Sex with his 15 Year Old Daughter Arrested

Operatives of police in Imo State have arrested a 44 year -old- man, Chimnonso Okonkwo, who resides in Orji, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, for allegedly having sex with his 15-year-old daughter.

Okonkwo was also accused of inviting his friends to have sex with his daughter.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, Orlando Godson Ikeokwu, said the Okonkwo was arrested after the police received credible information.

Ikeokwu said Okonkwo has been detained after confessing to the crime.

“It is noteworthy, that it wasn’t the first time this is happening, and that he normally invites his friends who come to his house to have canal knowledge of his own daughter,” Ikeokwu said in a statement on Tuesday.

“He has been detained, while investigation into the incident has commenced.”

The PPRO said that the culprit’s wife was not involved in the matter.

South African police on Tuesday fired rubber bullets and teargas in clashes with Cape Town township residents protesting over access to food aid during a coronavirus lockdown.

Hundreds of angry people fought running battles with the police, hurling rocks and setting up barricades on the streets with burning tyres in Mitchells Plain over undelivered food parcels.

“We have small children. We want to eat. They must also eat,” said resident and mother Nazile Bobbs.

“They said we are going to get parcels, where (are) the parcels? How long are we (going to be) in the lockdown?”

South Africa is currently in the middle of a five-week lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus which has so far infected more than 2,400 people.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to provide basics such as water and food supplies to the poorest South Africans.

Many people, especially those working in the informal economy, are unable to ply their trade and have lost income due to the lockdown which came into effect on March 27.

Community leader Liezl Manual said people came out of their homes “frustrated wanting to know” where the food parcels were.

“I don’t think Ramaphosa is doing something,” said another resident Denise Martin, adding that people would “rather die of coronavirus than to die in our homes of hunger”.

Some government officials were starting to become overwhelmed by the surging needs in a country ranked among one of the world’s most unequal.

“People are so desperate for aid such that even those people that would not be provided by us think they can get support from us,” Busisiwe Memela-Khambula CEO of SA Social Security Agency (Sassa), a government department responsible for distributing food aid.

The department normally helps people with disability, those who failed to access their social security grants or those generally experiencing hardships, she said.

“But unfortunately now everybody is experiencing hardships,” she said on local television.

Enugu Man Arrested For Alleged Rape Of 68-year-old Woman - FULL DETAILS

The Enugu State Police Command on Monday said it arrested a middle-aged man, Abba Kyari Mohammed, for assault and alleged rape of a 68-year-old woman in Umulungbe Community in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The suspected rapist, who hails from Jalingo, Taraba State, was said to have committed the offence on Saturday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the development. He told our correspondent on Monday in an interview that the suspect had been transferred from 9th Mile Police Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution.

Ndukwe said, “It is a case of assault and alleged ‘rape’ of 68-year-old woman in Umulegbe community. The women went to the bush on April 4 to pick cashew nuts. They were accosted by a man who was passing by and he used stick to flog them up and at the cause of beating them, one of them ran back to the village and alerted villagers.

“Youths came out in their number and mobbed the alleged rapist; save for the intervention of the security men, he would have been killed. They also alleged that the suspect raped the other woman who is about 68-years before they could come.

The PPRO added, “The suspect was arrested, taken to clinic with woman he allegedly raped and they were treated and the matter has been transferred to the State CID from the 9th Mile Police Division for further investigation,” he said.

Ndukwe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police dismissed the rumours that the suspect was a Fulani herdsman, saying “there was nothing like Fulani herdsman in the case.

SARS Arrest Killers Of Funke Olakunrin, Nine Months After

Nine months after she was brutally murdered in Ondo state, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have arrested killers of the late Mrs Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Making the disclosure in a press release on Monday, Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary said out of the four suspects arrested, three are from the northern part of the country.

The statement reads “After nine months after she was brutally murdered , the SARS in Ondo state has arrested four suspects in the killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of our Leader Chief R. F Fasoranti”.

God Will Reward Buhari For Allowing Boko Haram Kill Nigerians – Pastor Giwa Says

The Senior Pastor Adewale Giwa on Monday said only God can reward President Muhammadu Buhari for deliberately allowing Boko Haram to kill thousands of Nigerians over the years without bringing them to book.

Pastor Giwa made the remark while commending the President of Chad, Idriss Deby for leading the troops that captured Boko Haram’s arm store in Sambisa.

A statement signed and sent to us by the clergyman said that Deby has demonstrated good leadership skills that Nigerians would not forget in a hurry.

The Chadian president was said to have led his country’s troop that captured the Boko Haram arms store on Saturday, during the offensive against the insurgents.

Deby was reported to have led the operation which lasted for hours.

However, Giwa while praying for the president and his troops to succeed in the operation ahead, said:

“Nigerians won’t forget what Chad President and his people have done.
“They took us by surprise and decided to sacrifice themselves for millions of Nigerians and their people.
“Leadership requires excellence of character which President Idriss Deby has demonstrated, I think Nigerian leaders can learn a lesson from this.
“I pray the Lord guides and leads them to destroy these evil groups some unscrupulous politicians in Nigeria have been sponsoring for years.
“It is now obvious that our leaders in Nigeria deliberately allowed these groups to operate for a long time.

Boko Haram: Suicide Bomber Kill Seven In Cameroon

Seven people were killed when two suicide bombers, suspected to be members of Nigeria’s Boko Haram jihadist group, attacked a village in northern Cameroon on Sunday, police and a local official said.

“Two Boko Haram bombers blew themselves up at around 8 pm” in the attack on Amchide, on the border with Nigeria, a policeman said Monday, while a local official said a village chief and two teenagers were among the dead.

The attack took place as the villagers were “returning home” though a zone that the authorities have said is dangerous after 6 pm, the official said.

Amchide is a small trading village in Cameroon’s Far North province, a tongue of land that lies between Chad to the east and Nigeria to the west.

The province has been hit since 2014 by Boko Haram fighters making incursions from northeast Nigeria.

The jihadists’ campaign has killed more than 27,000 people since 2009, several thousand of them in Cameroon, and displaced more than two million, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis in the Lake Chad region.

According to Amnesty International, at least 275 people were killed in the Far North last year.

Soldiers Who Threatened To Rape Women In Warri Arrested In Lagos - VIDEO

The Nigerian Army says two officers who allegedly threatened to rape women in Delta state, and infect them with HIV, have been arrested.

In a video that went viral earlier on Friday, the officers had threatened the people of Warri in Delta, particularly mothers, wives and daughters, saying their planned action was in retaliation of the alleged murder of their colleague in the state.

Some youth protesting the killing of Joseph Pessu, a Warri resident, by a soldier enforcing the lockdown in the state, had reportedly beaten another soldier to death.

However, in a series of tweets on Friday evening, the army said the officers were arrested at the Ikeja military cantonment in Lagos state on Friday.

“Soldiers in a viral video using uncouth and uncivilized language purportedly threatening to molest women in Warri Delta State were arrested at 9 Brigade Ikeja Military Cantonment Lagos State today 3 April 2020 and further investigation is ongoing,” one the tweets read.

“The general public should be assured that the investigations will be swift and fair in accordance with applicable military laws. The outcome of the investigations will determine the most appropriate disciplinary measures that can be taken in the circumstance.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to reiterate that it would not tolerate any form of irresponsibility and indiscipline on the part of any of its personnel.”
