Oleh Nwogu Chimex - April 20, 2020

We have received the report of two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Abia State this evening from NCDC. Both patients are advanced in age but currently stable at an isolation center in our state.

On the direction of the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, we have deployed our ventilators to the isolation center in readiness for their use if eventually required to nurse them back to good health. Our well trained medical personnel are offering all necessary support and we hope and pray the patients survive this ailment.

Contact tracing has commenced in earnest and our rapid response team is currently moving to bring in those who may have had contact with the two index cases.

Meanwhile, the result of “Prosper Vincent” returned negative and he will promptly be released from isolation.

We wish to call on our people not to panic but continue to observe all the guidelines issued by NCDC and the state inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19:

-Stay at home unless there is a compelling need to go out either to buy drugs or food. Do so with your face mask on.

Oleh Nwogu Chimex - April 20, 2020

Leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra(IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has vowed to sacrifice everything to achieve freedom for the people of Biafra.

The IPOB leader made the disclosure in a broadcast on Sunday.

He said that nothing would stand in his way until Biafra is achieved.

“I will sacrifice anything sacrifiable to make sure I achieve Biafra. I have no cloth, I have nothing. My aim is Biafra, nothing else will stand in my way, until Biafra is restored so that the world will know that Biafra is a Divine project,” he stressed.
According to him, the death of his parents was the supreme sacrifice he has to pay in the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra.

Kanu stated:

“I sacrificed my father and mother. That’s the supreme sacrifice to make sure that Biafra is restored.”
He said that every verbal attack IPOB had launched was designed to bring freedom for the people.

“I do not hate anybody I want everybody Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo to be freed in the land of their ancestors even if you want to have a country, everybody will come together willingly and voluntarily to join a union not by force. That’s what I have been preaching from day one.”
He said further that he would continue to expose evil no matter where it was committed.

Kanu informed the group also arrested some state coordinators for stealing bags of rice meant for indigent Biafra to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown.

“I am holding some coordinators for stealing some bags of rice. They ran away with some bags of rice supplied for the poor people. They will be handled appropriately because Biafra is a land of accountability,” he stated.

Oleh Nwogu Chimex - April 20, 2020

The worldwide death toll from the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 160,685 on Sunday, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT.

More than 2,334,130 declared cases have been registered in 193 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December.

Of these cases, at least 518,900 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.

In the United States, now the worst-hit country, the death toll stood at 39,090 with 735,287 infections. At least 66,819 patients have recovered.

Italy is the next most-affected country with 23,227 deaths and 175,925 confirmed infections.

It is followed by Spain with 20,453 fatalities and 195,944 confirmed infections, France with 19,323 deaths and 151,793 infections and Britain with 15,464 deaths and 114,217 cases.

China excluding Hong Kong and Macau has to date declared 4,632 deaths and 82,735 cases.

Europe has listed 1,153,148 cases and 101,493 deaths to date, the US and Canada together have 768,670 cases with 40,619 deaths, Asia 162,256 cases with 6,951 deaths, the Middle East 122,819 cases with 5,559 deaths, Latin America and the Caribbean 98,202 cases with 4,915 deaths, Africa 21,165 cases with 1,058 deaths and Oceania 7,879 cases with 90 deaths.

The Abia state Police Command has announced the arrest of policemen involved in sporadic shooting in Ohafia on Friday that led to the death of an indigene of the area, identified as Ifeanyi Arunsi.
The State Police Command said it received with nostalgia the news of the shooting incident in Ebem Ohafia by a team of policemen led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, saying the team were neither on duty nor on COVID 19 preventive assignment.

In a release signed by the command’s PRO, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna on behalf of CP E. Ene Okon on Saturday made available to ABN TV, he said the team went out in a private car belonging to one of them to a drinking joint where they got drunk and while going back home, the driver hit a truck off-loading goods.

“In an ensuing argument between the Policemen and the people off-loading goods, one of the Policemen, a Constable disappeared from the scene and resurfaced with a Police rifle and started shooting sporadically under the influence of alcohol during which, bullet hit the victim on the buttocks.
“This singular act and others of same nature is regrettable, condemnable and not tolerated by both the Nigeria Police Force and its Abia State Command.
“The Commissioner of Police Abia State, CP E. Ene Okon commiserates with the immediate and extended families of the deceased as well as the entire Ohafia people.
“It is the Commissioner of Police’ sordid appeal to the youths and people of Ebem Ohafia to eschew violence and destruction of Police/government property while assuring that justice must be done.

Police Dismantle Roadblocks, Desert Lagos Roads

Oleh Step Hen - April 16, 2020
SOME Lagos residents have raised concerns over the absence of policemen on major roads and streets.

The police came out full force two weeks ago following the presidential directive that Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Captial Territory (FCT) be locked down, but they appear to be losing steam.

Their absence coincided with cult clashes and armed robbery attacks around the Lagos-Ogun border communities.

As the attacks spread to other parts of the state, such as Ikorodu, Ikotun, Oke Afa, Agege, Egbeda, Abule Egba, Meiran, Alakuko, Alagbado, Ijoko, Ogba and Ojodu Berger, there were complaints that the police have allegedly abandoned residents to their fate.

It was gathered that from Mushin to Abule Egba and back, there has been no police presence in the past three days.

All the checkpoints mounted by the police have been discarded while those on patrol were hardly visible at nights.

Similarly, those who ply Ikorodu road from Oshodi as well as from Mushin to Idimu shared similar concerns, urging the Commissioner of Police to address the situation.

“They (police) have abandoned the road and left the people to be at the mercy of hoodlums. This is the third day running that I have complained about the lack of police presence on the road, especially at nights.

“From Mushin to Abule Egba, there is no single police checkpoint in the night and the patrol teams are nowhere in sight.

“The police seem to have abandoned their duty to enforce the lockdown,” said a resident.

Similarly, another resident raised alarm over the lack of police presence from Mushin to Idimu.

She was surprised that from the time she left the office around 10:30pm on Tuesday till when she got home, she did not see a single policeman or roadblock.

“Even the roadblock in front of Ikotun Police Station had been removed. I did not see a single police operative anywhere and that is really scary considering that these hoodlums are everywhere now.

“The police need to be visible. Their presence gives a sense of security and safety to people. They should not abandon us at this time,” she pleaded.

Denying that the police have abdicated their responsibilities, spokesman Bala Elkana said they had to dismantle roadblocks since they were doing more of vehicular patrols.

“Our policemen are moving around everywhere. They cannot pin down on the roads when they need to pursue criminals trying to disturb the peace of Lagosians.

“Also, those complaining should not be afraid because we have men at major entry and exit points enforcing the lockdown. The police are working round the clock to keep Lagosians safe,” he said.

Lagos Creates 20 Centers for Testing Corona Virus, FCT Combs Resident Houses

Oleh Step Hen - April 16, 2020
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday said 20 centres would be created in Lagos State for collection of samples from people suspected to have contracted COVID-19.

The NCDC Director General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, who disclosed this at a press conference of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said the samples would be taken to the molecular laboratories in Lagos for testing.

Ihekweazu also said door-to-door collection of samples would soon begin in Abuja. He added that Nigeria had increased her testing capacity to 3,000

At the press conference, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, disclosed that the ministry had expanded its case definition for COVID-19.

The NCDC had, on Tuesday, said the problem the country was facing was not the inadequacy of molecular laboratories, but how adequate samples would get to the labs for testing.

It said the 12 molecular laboratories in the country, which it put their capacity at 1,500 on Tuesday, were not conducting enough tests.

At the PTF press conference on Wednesday, Ihekweazu said part of the measures to contain the spread of the virus was adoption of a change in strategy after more testing laboratories had been established.

Samples of people with acute respiratory infection, high fever to be taken

He said, “We are trying to change our strategy now and test more people. The testing laboratories have increased, but the bottleneck now is getting samples from the right people.

“We are setting up 20 health care facilities in Lagos to collect samples from people that think they have acute respiratory infections and high fever. We are intensifying our surveillance in health, so hospitals around Lagos and the FCT (Federal Capital Territory) can collect samples from people with high respiratory infections.

“In certain Abuja communities, we are going from door to door to collect samples from people that have acute respiratory infections. We are doing the same in Lagos. In these two places, Lagos and the FCT, where there is high incidence of the infection, we are now going to the patients to collect samples.

“Core centres have improved dramatically and we are urging the people that think they have acute respiratory infections to call us. Go to one of these 20 centres (in Lagos). Don’t go to any other centre. Lagos State will announce them as they are set up and make them accessible to everyone.

“We have the capacity right now to test 3,000 per day, but that capacity is not being fully utilised. That is why we focus on Lagos and the FCT.”

Health workers, senior citizens to be prioritised

The NCDC boss added that with a shortage of personal protective equipment around the world, Nigeria would give priority to health workers at isolation centres and laboratories, as well as senior citizens on the use of face masks.

He said, “It (use of masks) has been a controversial topic, but it does not have to be. The number of cases from over the world has risen to over two million with over 100,000 deaths of a disease that none of us knows about. The scale of the disease outbreak and response has to radically increase and the aspect of mask is one of them.

“On the other hand, there is a reality that we face. There is a chronic global shortage of personal protective equipment, including masks, around the world. The world was not prepared for a pandemic of this scale. We have to prioritise certain part of our population.

“Fifty per cent of the world masks are produced by China that has been locked down for months. They are now restarting their production and thankfully, some of those things are coming out.”

He said countries that produced medical materials, including masks, had banned their exportation because they too needed them.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, told reporters that “the police are on the trail of the suspect in order to intensify investigations into the matter.”

The protest of which a large number of women participated in Sapele area of the state was as a result of the extension of the coronavirus lockdown announced by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, on Tuesday evening.

DAILY POST reported earlier that women and youths took the streets in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of the state to protest the extension of lockdown by the government and lack of palliative care.

The protest recorded its first casualty as the protester was shot by a policeman as the women protested over hunger.
